December 28 – Psalms 130:5-6 (ESV)

I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in His Word I hope;
my soul waits for the Lord more than watchmen for the morning,
more than watchmen for the morning!

Waiting on God is never easy, but it is an aspect of the Christian life that is going to be present for anyone who is truly following Him. Don’t believe me? Type the word “Wait” into the search box on any Bible tool website (biblegateway.com is my top pick) or app (The YouVersion Bible app is my top pick) or look in the word index in your study Bible. There are TONS and tons of verses that deal with the issue of waiting on the Lord.

As we make our resolutions for the new year, wanting to commit our lives to the practices that will bind us to Christ, grow our faith, and prosper our souls, we need to add learning to wait to that list! As we seek and follow God, His answers are rarely going to come within minutes of the asking. Oh, sure, sometimes they will. But most often, His first answer will be wait.

Wait, I’m still mid-miracle here… Wait, I’ve got some refining to do in your heart before we take the next step… Wait, I’m still preparing the way… Wait, the real lesson here is patience, and you haven’t learned it yet… Wait, what I’m going to ask you to do is going to be difficult, and we’re still building your muscles, I’ll tell you when you’re ready… And countless other reasons.

So as we prepare for the new year, let us prepare our hearts to wait, and as our verse for the day asserts, as we’re waiting, let’s find hope in His Word. See, that’s the beauty of waiting with our Abba. He never asks us to wait alone in silence. As long as we continue to come to Him to listen (read His Word) He will whisper Truth to us the entire time. He’ll reassure us of what He’s doing. He’ll remind us who He is, who we are, and how safe we are in His care. He’ll reinforce our call to wait. He’ll WORK!

So let’s wait for the Lord. Let’s do it with expectation – just as the psalmist did. With as much confidence as we have in the wee hours of the morning as we wait for the first beams of sunlight to spread over the horizon – fully knowing they will, let’s wait for God to lead us – fully knowing He will!
