This Day in History: 0000-12-18
December 18 – Isaiah 9:7
His government and its peace will never end. He will rule with fairness and justice from the throne of His ancestor David for all eternity. The passionate commitment of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies will make this happen!
2 Samuel 7:11-16 – …“Furthermore, the Lord declares that He will make a house for you – a dynasty of kings! For when you die and are buried with your ancestors, I will raise up one of your descendants, your own offspring, and I will make his kingdom strong. He is the one who will build a house – a temple – for my name. And I will secure his royal throne forever. I will be his father, and he will be my son. If he sins, I will correct and discipline him with the rod, like any father would do. But my favor will not be taken from him as I took it from Saul, whom I removed from your sight. Your house and your kingdom will continue before me for all time, and your throne will be secure forever.
PROPHESY
-The Lord would secure the royal line of King David forever through his son Solomon who would build a temple for the Lord. The Messiah would come from this royal line.
-The rule of the Messiah will bring peace, it will be fair and just, and it will be eternal.
FULFILLMENT
Luke 1:30-33 – “Don’t be afraid, Mary,” the angel told her, “for you have found favor with God! You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you will name Him Jesus. He will be very great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give Him the throne of His ancestor David. And He will reign over Israel forever; His Kingdom will never end!
Romans 1: 2-4 – God promised this Good News long ago through His prophets in the Holy Scriptures. The Good News is about His Son. In His earthly life He was born into King David’s family line, and He was shown to be the Son of God when He was raised from the dead by the power of the Holy Spirit. He is Jesus Christ our Lord.
We’ve spent quite a bit of time looking at the various prophecies concerning the family line of the Messiah. This is the last one, and it’s important! Everyone, and I mean, EVERYONE knew Messiah would be a descendant of David through the line of Solomon. The people were expecting Him to be a great king, who would take back the nation from the Romans and rule from Jerusalem on the throne of Israel forever.
Unfortunately, this expectation overlooked a lot of other prophecies about the Messiah which foretold how He would come as a sacrifice for the sins of the world first. The Jewish people missed the fulfillment of prophecy in Jesus Christ because they were convinced they knew exactly how it would go down, and when they were wrong, they refused to change their minds.
Fortunately, we don’t have to guess whether He actually was the promised eternal King who would come through the line of David and Solomon. When the birth of Jesus Christ was announced by the angel Gabriel, he assured Mary of who this baby would be – the long-promised Messiah who would reign over Israel forever.
Paul confirms this fulfillment of prophesy in Romans and tells us we can know for sure that it’s true because of the resurrection. Dear sisters, our Lord and Savior sits securely on the Throne. His rule encompasses everything. His power is supreme, His reign will be eternal, and His love for us is great. He is coming again to finish the story, and we can be confident that, just as was promised in Isaiah, the passionate commitment of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies will make it happen. May we be ready! Every day of our lives, dear friends, may we be ready! He. IS. Coming!
