September 9 – Psalms 46:1-3 & 10-11
God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble. So we will not fear when earthquakes come and the mountains crumble into the sea. Let the oceans roar and foam. Let the mountains tremble as the waters surge!
Be still and know that I am God! I will be honored by every nation. I will be honored throughout the world.”
The Lord of Heaven’s Armies is here among us; the God of Israel is our fortress
Can you remember laying in bed as a child, wide eyed and trembling as the lightning flashed? As it lit the corners of your room for a moment and then left you alone in blackest darkness, did you listen expectantly for the crash of thunder only to jump even more when it finally shook you from the edge of sleep? Can you remember the howling of the wind and the pounding of the rain and recall the fear that your house would be torn apart?
We like to think that, as adults, we have outgrown such crippling, consuming fear. But have we really? What earthquake in your life causes you to lay awake at night and tremble? What mountain do you see crumbling around you causing your heart to race and your palms to sweat?
Take heart, my friend! The Lord of Heaven’s Armies is here among us! The God of Israel is our fortress. Let’s barricade ourselves inside His impenetrable walls! Let’s take refuge in Him and find the strength we need to face our fears and to conquer them! We are His, and He is always ready to help us in our times of trouble. He is calling to us right now, bidding us to be still and know that HE. IS. GOD.
