This Day in History: 0000-07-26

July 26 – 1 John 2:15-16

Do not love this world nor the things it offers you, for when you love the world, you do not have the love of the Father in you. For the world offers only a craving for physical pleasure, a craving for everything we see, and pride in our achievements and possessions. These are not from the Father, but are from this world.  And this world is fading away, along with everything that people crave. But anyone who does what pleases God will live forever.

It’s a tall order isn’t it? To not love the things of this world, or the things this world offers us. Let’s face it, physical pleasure and pride in ourselves, our possessions, and achievements are appealing. They just are. We want what feels good. Why wouldn’t we? It feels good! We obviously want what makes us feel good about ourselves. But, oh friends, it is a deception!

These things we crave, these temporal things we long for; they don’t last. They may bring a moment’s pleasure, but then they fade away and leave us empty and wanting. They have no power to ever satisfy. A life spent chasing them is a tormented life of discontent.  It is a life out of sync with our Heavenly Father.

It is only when we learn to crave what pleases Him that we will finally find contentment and joy. He is a good Father, and He longs to give us His love. He longs to fill His children with hearts that follow Him. He desires to give us the abundance of a life that will live forever, a life full of His blessings. Let’s surrender our love for what will not last and trade it in for His love today!
