This Day in History: 0000-07-11
July 11 – Matthew 6:25-27
That is why I tell you not to worry about everyday life – whether you have enough food and drink, or enough clothes to wear. Isn’t life more than food, and your body more than clothing? Look at the birds. They don’t plant or harvest or store food in barns, for your Heavenly Father feeds them. And aren’t you far more valuable to Him than they are? Can all your worries add a single moment to your life?
Well, can they? Doesn’t it often feel like maybe they can? Like if I just worry enough about what I’m eating and research until my head hurts I’ll be able to find the magic diet that will solve all my health problems and make my life longer? But Hebrews 9:27 promises, each one of us has been destined to die once. And Psalms 139:16 says that every day of my life was recorded in God’s book before I was even born. So the answer is no. All my worries absolutely cannot add a single moment to my life. It’s already done, already written. My destiny is set, so why worry about it?
Well, if that’s all there was to it, frankly, it wouldn’t change much would it? Just because my destiny is set doesn’t mean I won’t worry about it. If someone told me I’d have to get into a tank with 100 big nasty spiders tomorrow and there wasn’t anything I could do to change it, I’d still worry! A lot!
But that’s not all there is to it, friends. Our future is set. Our days are numbered, AND the One who is in control of it all is good, and holy, and powerful, and oh so loving! He hasn’t just set our days in place and closed the book and walked away. He’s involved. Interested. Compassionate. He delights in providing for us. Just as He delights in caring for the birds of the air, who matter far less to Him than we do.
THAT is why we don’t need to worry. Because we are PRECIOUS to the Creator of heaven and earth!
