This Day in History: 0000-05-11
May 11 – Hebrews 5:11-6:1
There is much more we would like to say about this, but it is difficult to explain, especially since you are spiritually dull and don’t seem to listen. You have been believers so long now that you ought to be teaching others. Instead, you need someone to teach you again, the basic things about God’s Word. You are like babies who need milk and cannot eat solid food. For someone who lives on milk is still an infant and doesn’t know how to do what is right. Solid food is for those who are mature, who through training have the skill to recognize the difference between right and wrong.
So let us stop going over the basic teachings about Christ again and again. Let us go on instead and become mature in our understanding. Surely we don’t need to start again with the fundamental importance of repenting of evil deeds and placing our faith in God.
Have we become mature, craving the solid food of God’s Word? Can we look back over our lives since we decided to follow Christ and see growth? Or, do we find we’re still going over the same things again and again? Do we still wrestle with the basics of the faith: God’s goodness, and our sinfulness?
Sadly, for far too many who claim the name of Christ, the answer is the later. There is a marked lack of hunger to move beyond the basics of faith and learn to understand the deep truths of Scripture. People are content to show up on Sunday and put God in their pocket for when they need Him.
Friends, we don’t need this truth so we can look around and judge others. It’s not our place to decide where someone else’s faith stands.
This truth is here for US!
Let’s examine ourselves closely! Do we crave time in God’s Word as we crave food? It is as vital to our survival! Is time spent in prayer as natural to us as breathing? It is just as important! Do we recognize our need for constant refinement, turning to Scripture to lead US to growth? Or do we come to the Word of God in pride, reading it to load ammunition into our weapons against others?
Lord God, we need Your help! We need You to divide us with Your Word! We need you to help us grow. Lord, we desire You more than anything else. Help us to reflect Your place in our lives day in and day out! Lord, make us mature. Grow our faith. Deepen our understanding. Humble our hearts. We love You! In Jesus’s Name, amen.
