March 28 – John 14:26 – 27

But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative – that is, the Holy Spirit – He will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you.  I am leaving you with a gift – peace of mind and heart.  And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give.  So don’t be troubled or afraid.

Oh how the human heart longs for peace!  Occasionally we may be able to find some sort of momentary mirage of peace apart from God.  Standing atop the Grand Canyon, or walking a section of the Adirondack Trail may bring a feeling of serenity but it is temporary.  Quickly snuffed out as we return to the chaos of life and it’s many trials.  Truth be told, humans will never be able to find a true, sustaining peace (the kind that surpasses all understanding) from this world because it is a gift from God.

I love that this verse about peace follows the one about the Holy Spirit because, truly, they are so interdependent!  It is because the Father sent us this gift of the indwelling of the third Person of the Trinity that the peace of God even exists.  As we are filled with the very Breath of Heaven, this great Advocate of ours begins immediately His work in our lives.  He teaches and guides us daily, He reminds us of God’s Word, He pleads our case and interprets our pleadings before the Throne of Grace.

Do you feel alone or unsettled today?  Don’t believe the lie, my friend!  We are never alone, for the Father has sent us the Advocate, and the Son left us the gift of His peace.  Bask in the light of that truth and remember, we are His!  So don’t be troubled or afraid!
