January 28 – Hebrews 13:5-6

Don’t love money; be satisfied with what you have. For God has said,
“I will never leave you. I will never abandon you.”
So we can say with confidence, “The Lord is my helper, so I will not fear. What can mere people do to me?”

Ah, the constant struggle to be satisfied with what we have. Why is it so difficult to remain content?  And it’s not just financially. These verses address a heart issue that spills over into a lot more than just the love of money!  In fact, if you read the rest of the thirteenth chapter of Hebrews you will find a theme running throughout – be satisfied with what you have, and rely on Jesus to equip you with what you need.

So, what’s at the heart of discontentment?  These verses seem to suggest that it’s simply a lack of focus on the constant presence of God.  That makes sense, doesn’t it?  Since the presence of God is immaterial, we often lose sight of the fact that the King of Kings, the Creator of heaven and earth, the Alpha and the Omega, the all-powerful, all-knowing, all-present GOD OF THE UNIVERSE is right there with us all the time, and He’s promised to take care of us! Seriously, what could we possibly need apart from that?

Let’s meditate on the truth of His presence today! Let’s ask Him to make it more tangible to us so that we’ll never forget again how very rich we are.  The Lord is our helper, so we will not fear! We’re His dearly loved children! What can mere people do to us?
