This Day in History: 0000-01-05

January 5

Deuteronomy 6:5-9 – And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength. And you must commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these commands that I am giving you today. Repeat them again and again to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up. Tie them to your hands and wear them on your foreheads as reminders. Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

What do we do when something is exciting or important to us? We talk about it, right? And if it is really important, as in one of the most important things to us, we make it a part of who we are. For instance when I became a mother, my kids and the job of raising them was so important to me that it became part of my identity. I became “mom” in addition to being Cherith.

Friends, if loving the Lord our God is important to us, if we love Him with all our hearts, as the Bible commands, then we’re going to talk about Him! We’re not going to keep our faith to ourselves because “it’s private.” No, that love will become such a part of who we are that it will become part of our identity. Not because we’re shoving it down people’s throats, or looking for opportunities to beat people over the head with it, but because it will just spill out of us all the time. We will be so consumed with our Lord that our love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control will not be able to be contained!

So what can we do today to “tie” God’s word to our hands? How can we write it on the doorposts of our homes? What steps will we take today to make a habit of repeating God’s word again and again to our children?

It is who we are, my friends! Let’s allow it to spill out of everything we do so that people everywhere look at us and know, we are the children of God!
